Besides popular songs and music from Broadway musicals, the other treasure trove of American music that jazz musicians have exploited is movie music. During and after World War II there was a large exodus of musicians and composers from Europe, so Hollywood had an amazing pool of talent from which to draw. Bronislau Kaper was born in Warsaw, Poland but began his composing career in Berlin before the rise of Nazi Germany. He escaped to Paris and was so successful there as a composer for film so that Louis Meyer of MGM brought him to the US in 1935. He wrote well crafted music with haunting melodies, two of which have made their way into every jazz musician's repertoire: "On Green Dolphin Street" and this number.
