Dizzy Gillespie was undisputedly a great trumpet virtuoso and a brilliant entertainer, but he is best remembered as one of the founding fathers of modern jazz. The pioneers of this new music, after mastering the style of their forebears, researched other musical genres and forms, and used this knowledge to develop an unprecedented integration of melody, harmony and rhythm. The chord progression of this tune utilizes chromatic voice leading that certainly was influenced by the classical tradition, but the implied compound meter of the melody echoes the African roots of jazz and latin music. This arrangement extrapolates even further from Dizzy's original conception.
